Chardonnay is both a grape and a town in France near which it was probably first grown. The name is derived from a Latin term meaning place of thistles. Steve MacRostie, long known as a producer of great Chardonnay, can also trace his origin to a place of thistles - the thistle being the national flower of Scotland, his ancestral home.
